Helpful Tips for Organizing Your Garage
Let’s face it: everyone’s garage could use a little organization. Some definitely need more than others, but there’s no question that garages seem to be one of the hardest spaces in the house to keep tidy. Because they are wide open spaces with no definite purpose, they attract all of the random household objects that don’t seem to belong anywhere. Yard supplies, tools, cars, unused furniture, seasonal decorations, and more miscellaneous objects commonly find their homes in the garage and when all of these random items come together, things can get messy pretty fast.
Although garages tend to be pretty messy, it’s nothing that a little planning and work can’t solve. Organizing your garage may seem like an overwhelming task (especially if it’s full of random junk), but there are a few things you can do that will make a big difference. Whether you’re looking to repurpose your garage, need to rearrange everything to make room to park your car or to work on a creative project, or simply want to reduce clutter, here are a few tips and tricks that will help you organize your garage.
Utilize the Ceiling and the Walls
Using the ceiling to store belongings is an often unthought-of method of organization. The required materials are inexpensive, and it is a quick and easy way to clear a surprising amount of clutter from off the floor.
Storing things like tools and yard supplies on the wall is a common practice. That’s because it does work, and it makes for easy organization. Building your own wall shelves for yard supplies, power tools or other items is quick and inexpensive, so it’s worth looking into.
Make It “Car-Proof”
If you park your car in your garage, you’ll want to make it “car-proof” to avoid damaging the garage or your car. Hanging a tennis ball from the ceiling to indicate where you should stop inside the garage will prevent you from driving too far and hitting a wall or anything else. To protect your car doors from hitting the walls of your garage, use pool noodles as makeshift bumpers. Simply cut them in half and attach them to the wall where the doors would otherwise make contact. Using these methods, you’ll be able to park your car closer to the walls without damaging them, allowing you more space to put other things.
Divide It Into Zones
One of the best ways to organize your garage is to divide it into sections. For example, one corner can be the yard supplies section, another corner can be dedicated to tools, the third corner to seasonal decorations and the last to miscellaneous storage. This small change can do wonders when it comes to organization and will help make keeping your garage clean a breeze.
